Encouraging Preschoolers

  • Your body language, tone of voice and words you use can all help encourage, teach and discipline your child. If you say 'I love you' but have your back turned to the child, they get a mixed message and can become confused.
  • Encourage children by showing confidence in them. You can motivate them and help them enjoy what they are doing by saying things like:
    • 'I knew you could do it!'
    • 'Hey! That looks interesting. What else can you do?'
    • 'Mmm. Playing with Sam looked fun!'
  • Describe your child's behaviour to them. It's like a mirror and helps them become more aware of what they are doing.
  • Help them understand by keeping to the point and being brief. Tell them how you feel. Use 'I' statements, eg 'I feel happy when you clean your teeth and make your bed'.
  • Use words to encourage your child and yourself. Look out for positive phrases which other people use and add them to your own. If your self esteem is high it's likely that your child's will be too.
