Helping Preschoolers

  • Young children can be willing helpers and enjoy the responsibility.
  • How children help at home varies greatly from family to family and culture to culture. Each family needs to decide what children will do at home to help.
  • Preschoolers generally like to help when you are doing something. Small tasks are easy to achieve and each success will encourage them to help again.
  • Getting things started:
    • start with something they like to do.
    • join in and show them what you want as you go.
    • explain why you do things.
    • make it fun! You could add a song or chat about how it feels good to help.
    • gradually do less yourself while still encouraging the child.
    • talk about you doing your job while your child does their job.
    • comment on effort made and avoid pointing out more than one mistake.
  • Preschoolers can:
    • put their dirty clothes in the wash basket
    • pour themselves a drink from a small jug
    • wash their own plate
    • pack away a few things
    • put on some of their clothes
    • butter their toast
    • water the garden
    • feed the pets and get the mail
    • tidy their room
    • help make their bed.
