Out Shopping With Preschooler
- We all have to do
shopping. It's a good idea for children to know about shopping and to join
in. This helps them learn how to behave in different places.
- Don't give into
unacceptable behaviour like tantrums, shouting or taking shelf items by
offering 'treats'.
- Shopping with children
can sometimes be a pain but it can help if you:
- involve children in
planning what you need to buy
- plan shopping at times
when they are likely to be happy, not tired or hungry
- talk to them about
ownership, about what is theirs, yours, the family's, other peoples',
the shop's
- know that young
children learn by touching things
- give them something to
hold or do while shopping
- ask questions like
'Can you find the toothpaste we usually get?' and 'How did you know it
was that one?'
- involve them in paying
for groceries, carrying a light bag or putting things in the trolley
- use shopping times as
a way to teach them about money, saving and where money comes from
- listen to what
children say they would like while shopping, thank them for telling you,
say you will remember and move on
- be consistent with
your rules.
- Letting children know
the difference between what we want and what we need will help you explain
why you shop the way you do. Not everyone can have what is on TV.
Persevere, shopping can be fun!
