Preschoolers Play
- Every child needs time
to play every day. Play is the best way children learn. When children play
they learn:
- that it's okay to make
mistakes
- there are different
ways of doing the same thing
- how to make choices
- how to get on with
other people
- to follow their
interests, solve problems and learn what they can do
- that learning is fun!
- Parents should
understand that play is important, when children play they are practising
for life.
- Play allows children to
relax, go at their own pace, be in control and practice and experiment
with ideas. Play is important at school as well as at home.
- Many teachers will
provide some play experiences during the day. They may organise the room
so children can choose different activities, have a corner for dramatic
play or leave out an interesting object to investigate.
- Teachers watch children
play, ask questions and will help them learn about words, shapes, numbers,
ideas and sharing. They build on what you 'teach' at home. Playing at home
is just as important as it is at school.
