Preschoolers Playing And Learning

  • Children love to play and when you join in you can make their day.
  • Play gives children some control over their world, they can practice skills without worrying about mistakes, and experiment. For example, help their understanding and coordination by building sand castles and knocking them down or pouring water from one container to another.
  • Play can happen anywhere and at any time and it doesn't have to cost anything! The more you play the better at it you will be.
  • Set some simple limits about safety, time and mess. Being clear and consistent in what you allow your child to do will keep them relaxed, help them understand and hopefully avoid any misbehaviour.
  • Ideas for play are limitless. You can play quietly, noisily, cleanly, messily, alone, with friends, inside or outside. Use water, sand, paper, crayons, paint and pens, toys, bicycles, old clothes for dressing up or cardboard boxes for cubbies.
  • Ask other parents about play and games. Read books, visit toy libraries, play groups and early childhood workers. Get creative. Watch your child and follow their interests.
  • Involve others in play from grandparents, careers and other children to pets. Make play part of your day, every day.
