Preschoolers Public Safety
- Be aware! Teach your
children the best ways to keep safe when out shopping, playing in a park
or if they become separated from you. To do this you must help them
understand what is not safe.
- Practise the ways you
want your child to deal with different situations. For example, work out
with them what they should do if lost in a shopping centre or public
place.
- Children can be
encouraged:
- to practice keeping
eye contact on the adult (big people are much easier to see and follow)
- to find a person who
works in the shop if separated from the adult (often this person is
standing near the cash register) - tell them to say 'I can't find my...'
- not to leave the shop
or centre by themselves
- never to walk away out
of the centre with anyone until the parent has found them
- to trust you to find
them if they stay where they are
- to rehearse regularly
and talk about their feelings if they have been lost
- to talk to people
while there is a parent with them.
