Preschoolers Reading
- Reading is a special
activity which can help your child learn and bring you closer together.
- By reading they learn
that:
- reading and listening
to stories is fun
- books can have
information, stories and pictures in them which are interesting
- symbols can represent
ideas (letters make words, words make sentences).
- You can read:
- picture books for all
ages
- books you enjoy
- poetry
- short stories which
can be read in one session.
- To read a story:
- find a comfortable
place
- hold the book so the
child can see the pages
- make sure you can be
heard
- vary your voice
sometimes
- change your voice to
suit the characters
- talk about the book.
- What else can you do?
- Read for yourself.
Your example is important.
- Make story reading a
regular, happy time.
- Look for written words
wherever you are with your child.
- Visit the library
often.
- Have children tell a
story they know and record it on tape to be sent to grandparents.
- Encourage children to
say or guess parts of a familiar story they know.
- Ask questions about
the story.
- Practice! The more you
read aloud the better you will get and the more fun and enjoyment you will
have!
