Preschoolers Road Safety

  • Safety on the road means learning how, where and with whom to cross a road. Children copy you so set a good example.
  • Point out road safety signs, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and intersections. Talk to your child about what they mean and show them what to do.
  • Children under seven are not able to judge how fast vehicles go so preschoolers should not cross the road alone.
  • Always walk on footpaths and don't let children play on the road.
  • You can help your child by:
    • teaching them to STOP, LOOK to the right, LOOK to the left, LOOK to the right again and walk straight across the road - NEVER RUN
    • practicing good road safety yourself
    • never calling them across a road to a waiting car
    • teaching them from a young age to recognise school crossings and that lollipop people are there to help them
    • practicing how to keep safe when you are both in public carparks, reversing drivers sometimes can't see children.
