Preschoolers Skills

  • School is more than reading, writing and counting. To be happy and successful at school children need to be able to share, listen, talk and play with others.
  • Children may also:
    • enjoy playing with three to five other children
    • find new situations an exciting challenge
    • be confident in running, throwing and catching a ball
    • draw pictures of people with recognisable body parts
    • remember short stories
    • hold a pencil as adults do
    • be able to write their name
    • introduce themselves to new people
    • make up games to play with simple rules
    • ask lots of questions and have their own ideas about how the world works
    • be able to group things according to their shape, size or colour
    • put things into order from big to small, thin to thick, tall to short
    • enjoy simple music activities
    • like to play 'pretend'
    • show care for and interest in animals.
  • You can help make school a happier experience for your children by helping them learn these skills at home. You don't need to 'teach' them. Children will learn from:
    • helping with household chores
    • playing
    • pretending
    • talking with other people
    • listening to music
    • drawing pictures
    • going on outings.
  • If you have questions about your child and school please talk to the school principal or teacher.
