Preschoolers Skills
- School is more than
reading, writing and counting. To be happy and successful at school
children need to be able to share, listen, talk and play with others.
- Children may also:
- enjoy playing with
three to five other children
- find new situations an
exciting challenge
- be confident in
running, throwing and catching a ball
- draw pictures of
people with recognisable body parts
- remember short stories
- hold a pencil as
adults do
- be able to write their
name
- introduce themselves
to new people
- make up games to play
with simple rules
- ask lots of questions
and have their own ideas about how the world works
- be able to group
things according to their shape, size or colour
- put things into order
from big to small, thin to thick, tall to short
- enjoy simple music
activities
- like to play 'pretend'
- show care for and
interest in animals.
- You can help make school
a happier experience for your children by helping them learn these skills
at home. You don't need to 'teach' them. Children will learn from:
- helping with household
chores
- playing
- pretending
- talking with other
people
- listening to music
- drawing pictures
- going on outings.
- If you have questions
about your child and school please talk to the school principal or
teacher.
