Preschoolers Social Situations
- Toilets away from home
can pose questions for your child. Now there are rooms full of toilets,
urinals and toilets where only boys or girls can go. There are machines
which can blow air and different smells.
- When going out you
should plan toilet stops for your child. Find out where toilets are at
each place you go and remind your child if they need to go.
- Children need to know
what toilet habits are acceptable in public. It may not be appropriate to
urinate behind a tree or bush as it sometimes is at home or on picnics.
- Young children need an
adult to accompany them in public toilets. Boys can use women's public
toilets until about the age of seven, unless they would prefer to go with
a male family member.
- Be aware of your
children's safety when they visit public toilets. Talk to them about who
to ask for help if they need it without scaring them about all strangers.
When using a cubicle, show your child how to use the door lock and show
them the toilet and seat, especially if they are different.
