Preschoolers Working On Computers
- Many children are
interested in computers. They are now in many homes, child care centres,
libraries, schools and work places, but they are optional in your home.
- If you have a computer,
preschoolers can use them but need to understand that computers aren't
toys and they should be supervised.
- What children can do on
a computer will depend on their skills and understanding. For example,
some young children may find it difficult to use a mouse as it requires a
certain degree of coordination. A three year old may recognise one or two
letters on the keyboard. A child of nearly five may use all the keys.
Experience will also make a difference.
- To help your preschooler
you can:
- use computers yourself
and learn more about them
- show care when you use
computers
- talk about why they
are useful.
- Buying a computer is a
big expense. Take care to find out about your choices before you buy.
- If you are buying
computer games and programs for children, look for those which:
- use pictures, colours
and symbols to give instructions for people who can't read
- do different things
for people of different abilities, skills and attention spans
- are entertaining and
challenging
- provide children with
a sense of achievement
- have some repetition.
- As with TV, it's better
to set time limits.
