Stopping Whining And Whingeing In Preschooler
- To help stop whining
it's best to show your child how to ask for something or how to wait. It
helps to break the task down into smaller, easy to do steps. Explain each
step and demonstrate clearly how to ask. Reward them with praise when they
do the right thing.
- Be clear in what you
expect. Be consistent and set achievable goals.
- Sometimes enlisting the
help of older children who have already learnt how to behave appropriately
can help.
- Expecting a three year
old to wait one minute is a reasonable goal but expectations will vary
between families and cultures.
- You can:
- attend to the child's
needs more quickly when they don't whine
- use a happy voice and
praise them when they do wait
- when talking to
someone and the child is whining, crouch down to their eye level and
explain that you are talking, that you hear them and will talk to them
soon if they stand by you and wait. You may want to hold your child's
hand while you quickly finish your conversation
- demonstrate the best
way to ask for something by doing it yourself
- respond to a whinge in
a calm and friendly voice, eg 'I'd like to listen to you, please use
your normal voice'.
