Talking About Our Bodies To Preschoolers
- Preschoolers are curious
about their bodies and especially the differences between girls and boys.
You can help your child develop a positive body attitude by talking about
bodies in a loving and relaxed way.
- They watch and learn.
Some families allow preschoolers to see older siblings or parents naked.
This way children can see for themselves physical differences and can help
them become at ease with their bodies.
- Genitals are just
another part of our body. By using the correct names, parents can give a
positive and healthy message to their child. Discuss with your family
which words are right for you. Remember, family words such as 'doodle' for
the penis or 'wee wee' for a vagina are not always understood away from
home.
- Give your child correct
information; the detail will depend on the child's age, understanding and
interest.
- Sometimes discussing the
body, its functions and differences can be embarrassing so if you need
help seek it. Some excellent books are available in many book stores. Use
these in conjunction with advice from other parents, friends and health
professionals.
