Talking About Sex To Preschoolers
- There are three things
which help children learn about sexuality:
- Self esteem - a person
who is confident about themselves won't let others put them down or use
them.
- Strong relationships -
where children feel safe to ask about anything and can feel comfortable
in caring for others.
- Understanding - how
their body, and other people's bodies, work.
- While there is a lot of
information about sex available there is also a lot of wrong information.
Children need parents to give them information:
- honestly
- as they need it
- at their level.
- The time to give
children information about sex is when they ask in one of the following
ways:
- with words
- by being curious about
other people's bodies
- by showing interest in
films or stories about babies or bodies
- by showing
embarrassment.
- No matter how old the
child is when the questions are asked they need to be answered. You might:
- read a book with them
- answer questions
simply
- use correct terms from
the start
- practice using correct
words aloud until you are comfortable with them.
