Is My Child Gifted?

  • It's hard to tell if children are gifted at a very young age. Early walking and talking are two possible signs.
  • Children develop at different rates and by the time children reach school the early talker and walker and the late walker and talker can be at the same level.
  • There are things which suggest children are gifted such as:
    • having a lot of words which are clear
    • being able to do something for a long time
    • creating complex games from common objects
    • having an 'adult' sense of humour
    • being a good leader
    • preferring to make friends with older children.
  • Whether your child is gifted or not, encourage their interests by:
    • taking them to places which will support their interest
    • finding books in libraries about that subject
    • not pushing - children have childlike emotions and physical growth even when they are 'bright'
    • encouraging their strengths, caring for others, music, movement, knowledge
    • encouraging social skills - children who don't have good social skills can feel left out at school.
