Primary Schoolers Answering Back
- Some children are
'cheeky' and answer back when they are told off. They often feel they are
being attacked and try to defend themselves. They haven't yet learnt how
to handle conflict.
- Children at this age are
becoming more independent and may question parents more.
- The best thing to do is
to speak to your child as you would like to be spoken to.
- Think about how you
might react if you were feeling threatened and out of control?
- It might help to
ignore the behaviour first of all.
- Buy time. Try telling
the child that you would like to hear their point of view but will
ignore them until they speak to you nicely.
- Tell your child what
the rules are again and that their behaviour is not acceptable. You could
suggest solving the problem by listening to each other so you can come
to an understanding.
- Answering back is like a
talking tantrum.
- The child is using
words to express emotions.
- Reply calmly and
clearly.
-
The emotions need to be acknowledged and cooled before you can begin to
reason with your child.
