Primary Schoolers Borrowing And Stealing
- Young children don't
know the difference between borrowing and stealing but they will gradually
learn.
- There are lots of
reasons why children steal:
- because they want
something
- because their friends
do it
- because they feel
unwanted or unloved
- to take revenge
- to look big and tough
in front of their friends.
- You can:
- tell your children by
words and example that stealing is NOT OK
- make sure your
children know the rules
- let your children know
you have faith in them to do the right thing
- let them 'borrow'
something and return it
- be careful not to
leave small change or other temptations around
- care about even small
amounts of money
- give children small
tasks like shopping or buying lunch and bringing home the change.
- If the child has stolen
more than once you need to find out why. You need to act quickly by:
- finding out exactly
what happened
- finding out as much as
you can about why they were stealing
- finding out if the
child has hidden what has been stolen
- making the child
return the property and apologise
- talking to the child
about why people do not steal and the effects stealing has on others
- making the child repay
things stolen from a shop
- not letting children
eat things as you go round the supermarket
-
letting children know you can trust them in the future.
