Primary Schoolers Breakfast
- Breakfast is the most
important meal of the day. Children need food so they can concentrate and
work at school and have lots of energy. Surveys suggest that over 50
percent of Australian children go to school with a poor breakfast or no
breakfast at all.
- A good breakfast should
have three of the five main food groups:
- bread and other
cereals
- meat, egg or
substitute
- milk or milk products
such as cheese or yoghurt
- butter or margarine
- fruit and vegetables.
- Parents can show their
children how to eat well by eating a healthy breakfast themselves.
- Parents can do simple
things such as putting out a selection of healthy things for children to
choose from or setting up the toaster so children can prepare their own
food. Baked beans on toast makes an excellent breakfast.
- Encourage children to
think about what they like to eat. Let them help with the preparation and
the cleaning up afterwards.
- Breakfast need not be a
stressful, rushed event. Plan the evening before, set the table, put out
cereals and fruit.
