Primary Schoolers Coping With Winning
- Winning can feel
fantastic. Being a good sport isn't about winning.
- When children are 'good
sports' they:
- are aware of other
children's feelings
- say how well the other
children did
- talk about the
competition in a matter of fact way, eg 'The track was hard'
- listen to other
children talk about the competition and how it felt for them.
- 'Good sports' do not:
- put themselves down
- say 'It was easy' (it
wasn't for some of the other children)
- boast and brag about
winning
- make fun of the other
team.
- We can help children by:
- celebrating their
feelings of success
- congratulating them on
their effort
- being calm and happy
- reminding them of the
other participants
- commenting on how
different people might be feeling
- behaving like a 'good
sport' ourselves
- telling them you love
them whether they win or lose.
- Some games seem to make
bad winners and losers so avoid:
- taunting and teasing
games
- grabbing and snatching
games
- games where children
push each other or hit each other with a ball.
