Primary Schoolers Fibs And Lies
- School aged children
slowly learn what truth is. They begin to understand why lying is wrong,
that it can cause confusion, problems or hurt people's feelings. They'll
still lie to get out of trouble, cheat to win at a game, tell tall tales
and boast. They'll also lie to get attention and love. This is all quite
normal. We all do.
- You can help by:
- not over reacting to a
tall tale
- letting the child know
you don't believe them, 'That's a great story! Now, tell me what really
happened'
- trying to make your
child feel secure with you and trust you
- concentrating on the
behaviour not the child, eg say you don't like or approve of what they
are doing but you still love them
- letting your child
know you expect the truth
- being honest with your
children, telling them how you feel, answering questions they ask
- not insisting on
knowing everything
- helping make it easy
for your child to tell the truth
- not make a guessing
game by saying 'Did you do it?' or 'Did something happen that I need to
know about?'
-
not lying to your child.
