Primary Schoolers Having Learning Difficulties

  • Some children grow and develop more slowly than others.
  • There are many names for this slow development. Sometimes having a name for the difficulty helps parents, teachers and the child cope.
  • Learning difficulties can arise when children:
    • can't pay attention
    • words seem to jump around on the page
    • feel things are going too fast for them
    • have physical disabilities
    • confuse letters and words, left and right, foreground and background
    • can't hear differences in sounds
    • need more time to learn
    • can't organise all they see, hear and think
    • have trouble remembering
    • have trouble speaking, moving or coordinating their bodies.
  • If you are worried about your child's progress:
    • check eyesight and hearing
    • speak to your child's teacher about your child's social development as well as their school work
    • see your doctor, speech therapist, health professional
