Primary Schoolers Healthy Foods
- If you let children pack
their own lunch they will learn about food and be more likely to eat what
they've prepared. Give them a simple list of guidelines. You might put all
the lunch fillings on one shelf of the fridge for them. Prepare the night
before.
- A lunchbox will keep
food from being squashed. A drink bottle can store soup or fruit juice. In
summer freeze the juice in the drink bottle. It will thaw by lunchtime and
keep the lunch box cool.
- Many children like
buying their lunches from the school canteen. You might have one 'lunch
order' day a week.
- Parents can set a good
example by eating healthily themselves.
- To encourage children to
stay away from sweet fruitbars, biscuits and chocolates you can offer
healthy snacks which might include:
- a mixture of dried
fruits
- crackers with a spread
- yoghurt
- homemade biscuits or
slices
- fruit
- cheese stick, triangle
or slice.
- Lunches might include:
- pita bread filled with
meat, cheese and tomato and cucumber
- savoury muffins
- pizza
- kebabs with sausages,
cherry tomatoes and cubes of cheese
- bread rolled around
cheese sticks
- meatballs, fish cakes
or vegie patties
- sandwiches cut in
fingers
- salads.
