Primary Schoolers Helping At School
- Teachers help children
to learn. This is more than teaching. It helps children develop skills so
they know how and why they learn.
- Parents are also
teachers and can help their children understand the importance of what
they're learning. For example when children see the importance of being
able to understand words, such as street signs, enjoying books and reading
labels, they understand why they need to learn to read.
- Parents can help
children understand that schools are important. They can ask about things
the children are learning, discuss what they've been talking about and
help them join in school activities.
- Parents can help their
children by joining in school activities. This can be a regular thing like
school canteens or reading groups or occasional things like school camps.
Children love parents and family members watching them perform, whether it
is a sporting event or a class play. Families need to decide for
themselves how much time they can give and what they want to do.
- Teachers like to have
parents' help with such things as:
- hearing children read
- showing children
something you like to do
- sharing a story with a
few children
- helping with a part of
the program such as physical activities or cooking
- mixing paint and
setting up materials for the children to use.
- Schools are different
from when most parents were in school. They are not scary places, they can
be fun! Schools are places where children learn, laugh, sing, paint, dance
and play sport. Parents can enjoy them too.
