Primary Schoolers Learning To Lose
- Losing is hard. Everyone
wants to win.
- Losing again and again
is hard on children's self esteem.
- Children should feel
successful even if they haven't won. This can be done by:
- playing down the need
to win
- noticing when they are
getting better at something
- being a 'good sport'
ourselves
- commenting on effort
rather than results
- encouraging team like
behaviour
- catching children
doing something right
- showing children easy
to learn skills, one at a time
- giving children time
to practice
- being light hearted
about winning
- reminding children how
much they've learnt since last month/season
- helping children find
different activities if they don't like the sport they are doing.
- achieving their own
goals - such as practising a skill that has been learned or achieving
one more goal than last week.
- If a child feels bad
about losing:
- show that you
understand their feelings
- help them find
something positive in the situation, eg 'You ran really well'
- give encouragement for
the next time
- help them practice
games where winning and losing doesn't matter like catching the ball
- take the pressure off
and find something fun to do
- tell them you love
them whether they win or lose
- think of lots of
different ways to practice a skill.
