Primary Schoolers Misbehavior
- It's often difficult for
parents to understand why children continue to do things we don't want
them to do.
- Children need simple,
clear instructions. For instance if the child is being too noisy, ask them
to be quiet and explain why. See that the instruction is obeyed. If you
say 'Stop being silly' it is not clear what you want the child to do.
- Follow your instructions
through by calmly doing the task with the child. This shows what is
wanted. This tells the child 'I am serious about what I say'.
- When a child repeatedly
misbehaves it might be for one of these reasons:
- attention
- a cry for help
- lack of skills
- power
- revenge
- frustration
- misunderstanding.
- We can help children by:
- listening to them
- giving them our full
attention several times a day
- encouraging them to
solve their own problems
- giving them
responsibility and praise for things they can do
- acknowledging their
feelings
- keeping the
communication lines open
- being consistent.
- making sure the tasks
and activities are appropriate to your child's age and development.
