Primary Schoolers Positive Parenting

  • Show your child affection - maybe a hug, a smile or even just a wink.
  • Find time each day to be with your children, to talk and listen to them.
  • Make a balance between love and firmness.
  • Try to be consistent. This stops confusion and children know what to expect from you.
  • Children like routine, it has a calming effect.
  • Try not to have too many rules, and be consistent with those you have.
  • Rules should be clearly communicated so children know there are choices - that their behaviour can lead to positive or negative consequences.
  • If children understand consequences they are motivated to make responsible decisions.
  • Parents need to make sure consequences fit and have no side effects that damage self esteem or that escalate anger.
    • Do the consequences fit?
    • Do they suit the child's age and understanding?
    • Are there specific difficulties, such as short term memory problems to take into account?
  • One of the best gifts a parent can give a child is to help them become responsible human beings. If children are consistently protected from the consequences of their behaviour, they won't learn or become mature and reliable.
  • Give your child choices so they can experiment with the result of their decisions.
  • Listen and talk to your child as a friend. When you do this good things happen.
    • You get to know each other better.
    • There will be fewer arguments.
    • Family relationships will improve.
    • The child feels important and gains in self esteem.
    • Children learn about body language and it's importance- smiling when discussing pleasant things, looking serious when talking about something significant.
    • Children learn how to ask questions thoughtfully.
    • Remember listening is more important than talking.
    • Listen without interrupting.
