Primary Schoolers Refusing To Go To School
- Children in WA have to
go to school from the year they turn six to the end of the year in which
they turn 15.
- Parents are required to
send their children to school.
- Some parents have
special permission to teach their children at home. They must make sure
children learn and there are superintendents who check the work.
- If a child is sick, has
an infection or has been injured in an accident they can stay at home. The
school can ask for a certificate from the doctor to explain what is wrong.
Parents can also ask for the children to have time off school for a death
in the family, a wedding or a family trip.
- If children aren't in
school during school hours a school welfare officer or police officer can
stop them and ask questions. Children have to tell their name, address,
age and the name and address of their school. They should also tell why
they are not in school. If the school welfare officer or police officer
isn't happy with the child's answers, the child can be taken home or to
the school.
- Children must have a
good reason for not going to school or they'll be charged with truancy in
the Children's Court and ordered to go to school.
