Primary Schoolers Self Esteem

  • Children need help to accept their learning difficulties. They need to know what to say to other children and to feel positively about themselves.
  • You can help your child find words to tell others:
    • 'It's hard for me to do these things... just like it's hard for you to do some things.'
    • 'Letters look fuzzy to me. They seem to jump around on the page.'
    • 'It's hard for me to write down my ideas.'
    • 'I don't remember what I read so I have to read things a couple of times.'
    • 'I'm good at maths but not so good at reading. My teacher's helping me.'
  • It is important for children to feel good about themselves. If they're having problems at school, make sure they get plenty of praise at home.
  • You might:
    • do things for your child and talk about what you are doing
    • do things with your child and help them where necessary
    • watch your child do things, give lots of praise and help in a positive way where necessary
    • respect your child's privacy
    • let your child do things alone without your help
    • try to find more things your child can do alone so they feel good about themselves.
