Primary Schoolers Self Esteem
- Children need help to
accept their learning difficulties. They need to know what to say to other
children and to feel positively about themselves.
- You can help your child
find words to tell others:
- 'It's hard for me to
do these things... just like it's hard for you to do some things.'
- 'Letters look fuzzy to
me. They seem to jump around on the page.'
- 'It's hard for me to
write down my ideas.'
- 'I don't remember what
I read so I have to read things a couple of times.'
- 'I'm good at maths but
not so good at reading. My teacher's helping me.'
- It is important for
children to feel good about themselves. If they're having problems at
school, make sure they get plenty of praise at home.
- You might:
- do things for your
child and talk about what you are doing
- do things with your
child and help them where necessary
- watch your child do
things, give lots of praise and help in a positive way where necessary
- respect your child's
privacy
- let your child do
things alone without your help
- try to find more
things your child can do alone so they feel good about themselves.
