Primary Schoolers Swearing
- Children love using
'naughty' words, often about the body or going to the toilet. Children are
either just over toilet training or still involved in it. They may have
heard older children and adults swearing. Swearing makes a child feel more
grown up.
- Many of the words we
call swear words are short, sharp words with harsh sounds which refer to
bodily functions. Just saying them releases tensions! Explain that. Talk
about finding other words. Teach children where the words come from.
- Some experimenting is a
normal part of growing up. Often it stops faster when parents don't pay
much attention.
- You can:
- set the limit - say
'that's enough now'
- avoid using swear
words yourself
- talk about places
where swearing is really unacceptable
- talk about how swear
words should not be used to hurt other people's feelings
- set a positive example
- tell children that the
language is unacceptable
- talk about what the
words really mean
- don't over react
- give examples of more
acceptable words the child could use.
