Primary Schoolers Talking To Teachers

  • Some parents find it really hard to talk to their child's teacher.
  • Teachers may use words which some parents find hard to understand. If you are not sure ask the teacher what they mean - to explain more clearly.
  • It can be difficult when you are talking about your child:
    • try and prepare for the meeting
    • write down questions and take them with you
    • be sure you and the teacher know why you are meeting
    • make sure the meeting is at a good time for both of you.
  • During the meeting:
    • take notes
    • write the date on the top of the paper
    • stay positive - remember you are trying to work together
    • tell the teacher what you understand has been said
    • ask them to explain anything you don't understand
    • work on solutions rather than just talking about problems
    • look at samples of your child's work
    • listen as the teacher explains what your child can do.
  • It will help you and your child if:
    • you get to know the teacher
    • have frequent chats about your child's progress
    • go to school meetings
    • join in the morning and afternoon teas, breakfasts or suppers when you can
    • do things to help the teacher in the classroom when you can
    • help out with trips.
