School Sores
- Impetigo (commonly known
as school sores) is a bacterial skin infection caused by the staph
organism, the strep organism or both.
- The infection spreads
easily to other parts of the infected person's body. It is spread from
person to person by touching the sores or from contaminated clothes.
- School sores show up as
flat, yellow, crusty or moist patches on the skin. They are extremely
infectious while the sores are moist and have a discharge.
- Children will often need
to stay away from other children until treatment has started.
- School sores on parts of
the skin not covered by clothing should be covered over with a water tight
dressing.
- It's important to wash
the child daily and wash the sores with mild soap and water.
- The child's clothing,
towels and bedding need to be changed and washed daily.
- Practice good hand
washing for all family members.
- Doctors may recommend
the use of an ointment or antibiotics taken by mouth. You must take your
child to the doctor for treatment.
