Worms

  • Children can get many types of worms. Most need to live for a while in water, soil or animals before they became infectious to humans.
  • The most common childhood worm is the pinworm (also known as threadworm). Children can get an itchy bottom, become irritable and behave differently. Pinworms are spread by touching the anal area and then putting their hands to their mouth. Pinworms don't infect dogs and cats so pets are not a source of infection.
  • Pinworms can spread as long as worms live in the gut.
  • Infection continues until the child/adult has treatment. Once treated, adults and children in the family will be free of the pinworm infection within a day.
  • Clothes and bed linen need to be washed in hot water.
  • Treatment is simple, safe and effective and available from your chemist.
  • Encourage all family members to practice washing their hands and keep children's fingernails cut short.
  • Babies, pregnant women and any family member on medication should always check with the chemist/doctor before taking any treatment for worms
