Teenagers Expressing Feelings

  • Changes in a young person's body are caused by hormones. These chemicals also affect thinking and feeling, and mood swings are common.
  • These changes take some getting used to. Teenagers become aware of themselves as sexual beings and can become concerned that they don't measure up to ideal images seen on television. They are bombarded with information about pregnancy and other sexually related issues.
  • A teenager might feel very excited about becoming an adult - starting a career, making decisions, growing up. But they may also be anxious that their childhood is ending and these years can, at times, be a time of challenge and argument.
  • Many teenagers want to experiment with the privileges of adulthood. One of the most difficult lessons of this time is enjoying the benefits while also learning to accept the responsibilities.
  • Talk about relationships and about sexual decision making.
    • Self esteem can be very fragile so try not to:
    • over emphasise physical appearance
    • compare your child to others
    • tease them about changes in their body.
