Teenagers Having Drugs

  • Dangerous drugs are readily available. Many young people will experiment with soft drugs like cannabis. Few go on to hard drugs such as heroin.
  • Try to minimise the risks.
    • Talk and listen to your children.
    • Speak honestly. Some drugs are very dangerous, others less so. Discuss all drugs. Make sure you know as much as you possibly can. Discuss dangers.
    • Help your teenager know about other options.
  • Discuss problems. Help your teenager develop self confidence and skills so they can resist their friends when they are urged to try drugs.
  • If you discover your child has been smoking cannabis, try not to over react. This doesn't necessarily mean your child is hooked or a hardened drug user. They may have wanted some excitement. They may see cannabis as being the same as drinking or smoking.
