Teenagers Moving Out

  • When teenagers leave home it can be a confusing, exciting and sad time for them and you. For the young person there are the mixed feelings of:
    • I'll be able to do what I want when I want.
    • I'll be able to be an adult instead of being treated as a child.
    • Will I be able to manage financially and emotionally?
    • I'm too old to have to tell everyone everywhere I go.
    • Am I old enough to be on my own?
    • I'll be able to have my friends over whenever I want.
    • Can I come home again if I can't make it on my own?
  • It is a big step taken for many reasons - both good and bad. You can help yourself and your teenager when you:
    • remember they are young people taking a big step
    • understand they may be nervous and need your support - even though they may not ask
    • avoid being unfairly negative about the move
    • offer to help them look for accommodation, furniture and household goods
    • help them plan the move properly by thinking of all the good and bad points
    • continue to include them in family activities and discussion.
