Teenagers Saying No To Drugs
- Children need to learn
how to say no to drugs.
- It's hard to say no when
someone you like wants you to take a drug. People may make you look young,
stupid or foolish if you don't take the drug.
- Children need help to
face these situations. They need to practice what to do and say:
- talk about facts not
threats.
- talk each situation
through, when and why drugs might be offered and what you say in each
case.
- talk about risks.
- talk about how each
drug can affect the child.
- talk about choices
which are being made.
- talk about the ways
drugs fit with the future your child sees.
- If you find your child
has been offered drugs and has said no, tell them how proud you are and
why.
- If your child has
already taken drugs try to find out why. Talk about the other results of
taking the drugs. Your anger and fear won't help.
- However if you think
that the child is abusing drugs or the child repeats the behaviour you
might ask for professional help.
