Teenagers Shop Lifting
- Many teenagers will go
through a stage where they steal something. Sometimes it is the result of
peer pressure and sometimes not. Either way, it's not acceptable and must
be stopped.
- Some reasons why
teenagers might steal include:
- they don't think
they'll get caught
- they don't think they
are really stealing - the shop can afford it, the shop has insurance
- they want something
they can't afford
- they enjoy the thrill
and fear of being caught
- they enjoy feeling
smarter than adults when they don't get caught
- they don't think what
they have stolen is important.
- Teenagers who shoplift
talk themselves into believing it's okay. You can persuade them it is not
okay by:
- talking about the
reasons things cost what they do and how shoplifting adds to the overall
cost for all people
- talking about the ways
insurance premiums are worked out
- setting a good example
- helping them recognise
their strength to say 'no' even when friends dare them.
- helping them
understand how the shop owner feels and their frustration at losing hard
earned money and goods.
