Teenagers Solving Problems

  • Exploring alternatives can help you and your teenager solve problems. It can help avoid arguments and help teenagers learn to solve their own problems.
  • If your teenager comes to you with a problem:
    • help them work out what it is; get as much information as you can
    • get them thinking, ask what ideas or solutions they have thought of or what they would suggest to a friend in the same position
    • don't judge them
    • make your own suggestions but don't force them
    • set a time to see how it's going so you can talk about it again.
  • If you have a problem with your teenager:
    • choose a time to talk when they are not busy and when you are both calm
    • tell them what you think the problem is - make it clear you want to help find a good solution for both of you
    • negotiate a solution with both of you contributing ideas and deciding on a joint approach
    • make a commitment to try the idea and set a time to discuss it again.
