Teenagers Solving Problems
- Exploring alternatives
can help you and your teenager solve problems. It can help avoid arguments
and help teenagers learn to solve their own problems.
- If your teenager comes
to you with a problem:
- help them work out
what it is; get as much information as you can
- get them thinking, ask
what ideas or solutions they have thought of or what they would suggest
to a friend in the same position
- don't judge them
- make your own
suggestions but don't force them
- set a time to see how
it's going so you can talk about it again.
- If you have a problem
with your teenager:
- choose a time to talk
when they are not busy and when you are both calm
- tell them what you
think the problem is - make it clear you want to help find a good
solution for both of you
- negotiate a solution
with both of you contributing ideas and deciding on a joint approach
- make a commitment to
try the idea and set a time to discuss it again.
