Teenagers Thinking For Themselves
- To think successfully
for ourselves we all need to:
- have confidence in
ourselves
- feel others have
confidence in us
- know our goals
- be aware of our
abilities
- feel others support us
and our interests
- have realistic goals
- feel others accept us
as we are.
- Teenagers need these
things too. You can encourage them to think for themselves when you:
- give them
responsibility
- tell them you trust
and respect them
- believe they will
succeed
- show appreciation when
they are thoughtful or kind
- ask their opinion on
things they know about - cars, fashion, art, computers, politics, sport,
music
- involve them in
decisions about studies, careers, family vacations and outings,
household chores and pocket money
- accept mistakes -
yours and theirs
- focus on effort,
progress, achievement or accomplishments
- turn negatives into
positives
- show confidence in
their judgments.
