Fussy Eating Toddlers
- Toddlers bodies are
small so they will often eat small amounts of food six to seven times
during the day and sometimes can't wait until big mealtimes.
- Snacks such as fresh
fruits and vegetables are better than foods which contain more sugar, salt
and fat.
- Just like adults,
children may not like some foods, encourage them to try a variety of foods
without fussing. If you fuss they will soon realise this is a great way to
get attention. Be positive and encourage any efforts to taste different
things. Remember children's taste buds change; what they dislike today
they may well enjoy in six months or a year.
- Choices are important
because they help children have some control over their world. A selection
of foods helps them work out their likes and dislikes. Buy things the
whole family eats. To encourage choice it might help to serve food in the
centre of the table where everyone can have fun choosings - like tacos or
different cold meats and salads.
- Toddlers usually enjoy
feeding themselves and most can manage a spoon and a drink from a cup. To
avoid accidents only pour small amounts into a plastic cup and serve small
amounts of food in bowls.
