Toddlers Acceptable Behaviour

  • Children need to know what is acceptable behaviour and what is not. It helps to fix rules so all parents and caregivers expect the same thing.
    • You must decide as a family what is acceptable behaviour:
    • Is it okay to shout inside sometimes? If so, when?
    • Is it okay to yell and scream? If so, when?
  • Toddlers also need to tell you what their problems are. When they choose unsuitable ways of letting you know, tell them why you don't like the way they went about it.
  • Do not try to reason with or talk calmly to a child when they are in the middle of yelling, screaming or throwing a tantrum.
  • Help them to find better ways to let you know what they want and use the same methods yourself. You should say their name, sit next to them and give them a hug.
  • Make sure you DO notice when they try to act better. By avoiding the power game and working together you will both feel more relaxed. Remember, some days are better than others. Don't give up!
