Toddlers Positive Approaches
- Remember to 'catch
children doing good' - reward and encourage when your child behaves well.
- Smacking tells a child
what not to do. Teach your child what you prefer them to do.
- Before smacking, think
of what you might do instead, for example ignore or distract.
- Be consistent and use
punishment as little as possible. Avoid threats and nagging.
- If you do use
punishment, do it immediately after the unacceptable behaviour has
occurred and keep it short.
- Remember the child's age
and be reasonable in what you expect.
- Praise and reward
acceptable behaviours.
- Set an example by
showing in your actions what behaviour is acceptable.
- Give short, simple
explanations about acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.
- Don't threaten to
withdraw affection. Avoid bribery and making promises you can't keep.
