Toddlers Skipping Naps

  • Up to age one most babies will probably have a mid morning and mid afternoon sleep. By 15 to 18 months toddlers will usually have a midday rest but at around two and a half to four years many toddlers may not need daytime sleeps.
  • During this time of no naps toddlers can be cross and demanding in the late afternoon but should go to bed early (around 7pm) and sleep well. If you want them to go to bed earlier in the evening without waking during the night avoid an afternoon sleep.
  • Introduce some quiet play after lunch or mid afternoon which will help your child relax without a sleep. Books, puzzles and listening to story tapes together can slow your child down and help you both renew your energy.
  • Taking your active toddler for a walk can be useful in quietening them.

Remember, children have different sleeping patterns. Some continue daytime naps up to school, others have cut them out by two or three. Your child has their own time clock.
