In the times that we live today environment education and studies are a part of studies at school itself. So why are we all suddenly out there talking about environment? The rampant destruction of forests and wildlife for human benefits has affected the environment we live in adversely.
The only way out is to save the environment which will only come with awareness and action towards saving the planet. It has taken years of efforts to alter the thinking of thousands of people. Teaching young children about environment means forming informed individuals who are aware about the world they live in and are well-equipped to take care of it. Therefore educating kids about the environment is as essential as teaching them maths or science. Here goes how you can educate your child about loving and living on the blue planet.
Environment Journals and Magazines
Subscribe to environmental journals and magazine. Having literature about the environment is the first step towards. There are a number of magazines you can subscribe to. Spend time going through these journals together. Talk about what fascinates you and ask your child what fascinates him or her. Once you start this it will eventually become a habit to read these magazines and stay up-to-date about what is happening around the world. If you have views you and your child can even write to the editor and who knows your comments or views might even get published.
Watch informational Television
Instead of watching boring and mundane shows spend time watching special serials on channels like Discovery, National Geographic or Animal Planet. These television channels present information in the most interesting ways and are great to watch together with kids. Watching special series on them can help create awareness and direct you and your child towards transforming the planet into a greener one.
Take a walk together
There is nothing better than a walk together in the woods. While you walk along with your child in the realms of nature be aware of the sounds, plants, trees and animals around you. You can simply learn by observation and understand that the forests are the life system of many animals that form the delicate chain of survival. And this entire system keeps even human alive. It will also show your child that forests are the homes of wild creatures and we cannot destroy them.
Show love for Nature
Once you and your child start developing an understanding of the environment there is no way you can stop loving nature. You can show your love for nature in many ways. Some of them are planting trees, to let animals be in the wild by avoiding visiting zoos and circuses. A jungle safari is better than a visit to the zoo. You can keep some water outside your window for thirsty sparrows and pigeons to sip. You can even keep some food grains.
You must make an effort as a family to reduce using plastic and unnecessary shopping. You can try and treat your refuse in the correct manner by separating wet and dry waste. Show your child how to save water. These are very basic things that can make your child go a long way in making a difference to the planet.
Be a part of environmental groups
Join an environmental group that you believe in like green peace, PETA or any other. Participate in their activities to affect a larger change. You can enrol your kids in special camps also. All this will help show your child what are we dealing with and develop a good understanding of environmental issues plaguing the planet earth.
