Parents are so particular about teaching their child importance of studies, behaving properly, and so on. But do they even think about teaching and developing social skills to their kids to help them become better individuals and build up their self esteem and get a better sense of belonging.
Extracurricular activities
When your child participates in extra-curricular activities like debates, sports, various competitions, he interacts with his teachers, fellow participants, classmates which help him develop good communication skills and he learns lot of positive qualities like leadership, co-operation and learning how to survive in a group.
Building long lasting friendships
From the time, your kid learns to walk and interact with others, especially a preschooler, take him out for walks. Introduce him to other kids, let him play with them. So even if your kid is shy, he will initially be reluctant to come out of his shell but slowly he will learn to play with others, bond with few kids. As your child grows, you should make your child understand the true meaning of friendships. Help him accept fellow classmates with open arms, always greet new students with a smile and say Hi.
Take them out to socialize
Parents should take time out to take your kids to enjoy a movie or watching a cricket match your friend’s son is playing. Have family get together and picnics with your friend’s family. In this way you can get your child to open up especially if he is shy. He might need your help. You should ask your child to go to that classmate’s birthday party; he is feeling shy to go.
Activities at home
You should encourage lots of games and activities such as reading, watching movies, listening to good music. In this way your child will be knowledgeable and will feel confident in interacting with others. He will be a good conversationalist and will develop oratory skills. He will learn to speak well and be a good listener too.
Explain the importance of having friends
Every kid is not the same. Some take time to make friends and some find it easy to talk to their classmates. You as parents should teach them the importance of having few but good friends. It teaches them to not just share their thoughts and interests but also lets them know about their friends. He might be able to find some common interest too. It will even help him feel less self conscious. And they can make long lasting emotional bonds.
Encourage your kid to get friends home
You should organize birthday parties for your kids at home so that he can have a good time with his friends. You can also get to know them better. Happy moments are to be shared with friends. At the same time, when your kid needs some help with his homework or if he is weak in a particular subject, his friends can help with it.
