Have you ever heard your child say, “I hate school and I don’t want to ever go back.” Lots of kids feel this way, especially in the initial stages of their life. As they grow up they might enjoy going to school once they become familiar with the other kids. School is an important part of a child’s growth and learning process. So you need to make going to school more fun.
Look for signs of stress
You need to look for signs of stress. A kid might feel nervous about going to school and might have headaches and butterflies in the stomach. If he is having trouble sleeping, he would be tired and feel giddy and feel like throwing up. Make sure your kid eats well and sleeps on time. Help him ease out any tension that he has regarding going to school. Talk to him, make him feel better.
Reasons for disliking school
Why do kids dislike school? There can be a number of reasons like they might not like a particular teacher, a fellow classmate, who is bullying them, or worrying about not having too many friends. All these things can be solved by talking to your child. Sometimes they might not enjoy the school work. They are bored by the teaching methods or they find it difficult to cope up with studies.
School can be fun too
Ask your child to make a list of things he enjoys likes and dislikes about school. He might remember to do his homework if he notes it down. He might have only one good friend but make him understand that having one good friend is better than many bad friends. If he doesn’t like teaching methods at school, don’t worry you make it more fun teaching him. You can have quiz contests to make studies more fun. Have more interactive methods so that the child doesn’t feel bored easily.
Going for PTA meetings
One of the parents should make it a point to attend your child’s school PTA meetings. You need to voice your opinion and give suggestion to his school teachers to adopt interesting teaching methods. Have more of extracurricular activities, so that students are relaxed from time to time. Encourage them to participate in sports, painting and dance workshops according to their interest. This will help in over all development of the child’s personality.
Looking beyond school textbooks
You can get interesting books and CDs, with pictures to get your child involved in his studies. Kids always like bright and colourful pictures. If for example, your child doesn’t like history subject, you show him some movies based on great personalities from history. Show them some websites which have loads of pictures and information. Help them make power point presentations or help them in projects. They might enjoy working together.
