You may be like a protecting shield to your child when you are around but remember your child is on his or her own, when in school or college or later may be when he is on his own in this big wide world. So it is better that you prepare your child to be independent and deal with things with confidence. Here’s some simple but helpful information on how you can teach your child to be independent.
Let them prepare themselves
When preparing for school just instruct them what they have to do and let them do it. Be around and watch what they do. Ask them to arrange books, check homework and keep the books they require. Let them clean their bags daily. Ask them to put their lunch boxes in place. Let them put their socks and shoes in place. Teach them to comb their hair. Let them do their home work and you can check it once they are done. Getting ready for dinner and changing into the night dress must become a habit. These are very small things but can really help your child be independent.
Let them do the transactions
While you take them out shopping for vegetables let them do the transactions. Give the money in their hands and let them handle the exchange. It will give them great confidence while dealing with money.
Let them talk for themselves
If they have left homework undone let them deal with it. DO not offer to do their homework. It will make them more responsible. If you help them out it will make them dependent. Let them talk to teachers if their home work is undone. Be good to them if they come back home all down and worried. Talk out the situation and tell them how they are responsible for things that happen to them.
How to keep themselves safe
Show them how to keep away from strangers and not accept goodies from people they do not know well. Keep them equipped with a pepper spray if they go out on trips. Let them keep all important numbers all the time with them. Children do not have a problem even memorising phone numbers.
Explain to them to not get scared of bullies in school and report them. Also take them into confidence that if anyone is harassing them at school for no reason to report it immediately. Ask them to stay alert on the school bus or when they are travelling to and fro home on their own.
Explain the value of things
Always explain your kids the value of things that you buy them. Expensive school bags, toys, fees for special classes and the things they use at home. Tell them that you and your partner work hard for making sure the family has a good life and they must value the importance of it all. It will create sensitivity in them towards the world and how things are acquired and earned with hard work and dedication. It will show them that independence does not mean just being free but with independence comes responsibility.
