anti aging

All of us know that aging is a normal process and almost all of us dread becoming old. Strange as it may seem aging is the consequence of oxidation reactions. While on the one hand oxygen is necessary to sustain life, on the other hand during the process of combustion oxygen free radicals are produced. In layman’s language it means that these oxygen molecules do not contain electrons. Since it is incomplete, it tries to borrow an electron from its neighbor or if it fails to do this, it tries to help another incomplete molecule to become complete. You can imagine the chaos that this causes in the molecular system. Amidst this chaos, destruction of good cells takes place and over a period of time, the damage results in aging. The other theory that surrounds aging is the decline in growth hormones like, estrogen and progesterone. These growth hormones ensure growth of tissues, organs, skin, muscles and bones. Melatonin helps in inducing sleep  and other thyroid hormones energize . A decline in all this leads to aging.

The next question is can we hope to combat these factors which cause aging? Over the years, many anti aging solutions have been put forward, some more effective than the others. Since We have to keep free radicals at bay, antioxidants are a must. A good healthy diet should ensure this. Complemented with a regular exercise program, sugar imbalances also can be prevented. Vitamins and herbs which act as stress relievers are known to do wonders as far as anti aging products go. Since the production of hormones is on the decline, hormone replacement therapy could act as age suppressors.

Indians have been known to fast since times immemorial and strange as it may seem, fasting has psychological benefits and visibly benefits the body as well. It is known to have some effect on regressing the age of the individual. Mud baths have also been in vogue for a long time and mineral baths have known to be equally effective. Soaking in Cucumber or citrus water in eucalyptus and lavender scented rooms, having sauna baths and steam baths all help to bring life to the skin and make it look like new.

Massages, especially oil massages tone and rejuvenate the skin immensely, help to remove dead cells and bring back vitality and health to the skin. This would very naturally retard the aging process and help to make the person more youthful. There are lotions, creams and potions, which promise to remove wrinkles, remove dead cells and stem the aging process, but at the end of it all the result may still not be encouraging. A good diet, plenty of water, a disciplined regimen of exercise and vitamin supplements will go a long way in warding off aging, but sooner or later you are faced with the inevitable - that of becoming old. ~ author Mini Swami.
