how to tell if someone is lying

We all remember those time-tested fairy tales that taught us the evils of lying, but yet we have all grown up to be liars. While there are those who live a life of lies, there are a majority of us speak a lie for the need of lying. What does this mean? Simply, that out of compulsion we do need to lie. And telling small white lies are not an evil as long as we are doing no harm to anyone. Bad lies are those that are spoken to destroy others.

A commonly used tool to detect lies is the lie detector or the polygraph.

However, A long-time law enforcement favorite, the lie detector, now finds itself in lights of scientific inquiry & the lie detector is not considered fool proof.

Some states and court judges now accept lie-detector results, but many states ban them outright. In theory, the polygraph or lie detector relies on the different responses of the guilty and innocent to "relevant" and "control" questions during an interview. This is how the lie detector works.

Amongst the prominent signs that someone is lying is that the person expressing the lie is unable to look into the eyes of the one they are addressing. And more prominently a liar would look in a downward position towards the left direction. Another pointer towards al liar is that they would keep moving their hands over their face. If it is a mild white lie then they would touch their mouth lightly and if its heavy lie under which they feel burdened then they rub their eyebrows. If they break out into beads of sweat then know that they are surely hiding away something behind their words.

You must observe the facial expressions. A person who lies lacks the ability to co-ordinate what is on their lips and what is it their eyes say. Most people prefer to hide the fact that they are in a sorrowful situation, and so while they may smile and say ‘I am fine’, and the eyes seems all watery as if prepared for an outburst, then know there is a storm of sorrow ready to come to the fore.

Apart from body language, even speech gives way to bringing to the fore whether one is lying or not. Suppose one uses a lot of stammering and hesitating syllables like ums, and ah, then they are making an effort to hide something. Another pointer is when the person is revealing more information than is required, just rumbling on endlessly.

Basically to figure out whether one is lying or not, one has to primarily be alert and aware, otherwise just about anyone can pull the carpet from under one’s feet.
