Naming your business

The ‘name’ or ‘title’ is the identity of the object or person; and in the case of a product or business venture, it is what generates the revenue, primarily. The axiom - ‘Never judge a book by its cover’, definitely gives way to the belief – ‘The first impression is the last impression.’ Undoubtedly, the name of your business venture sells you before your product or service actually does.

Just like naming a baby, naming your business is a tough job, but not as tough when you keep a number of thumb rules in mind. The name should be short and easy, so that your prospective client finds it easy to recall when the need arises. It must relate to the nature of your business. For instance, your business pertains to stocks and shares and you name your business ‘Money Earning Den’, surely your first time clientele would walk into your office thinking it is a betting rink. A more effective name would be ‘Stock Watch’.

Tracking down a unique name is also important. It is difficult though as with the number of businesses around, there seems to be fewer choices left. But that is where the uniqueness exists - in the few untouched names. Being creative and innovative play a prime role in bringing in that different name. For instance, you are opening a bookshop, it is all too common to call it – ‘The Book House’ or ‘Books for You’ or ‘Booklovers’, etc. A creative name could be ‘Reader’s Haven’ or maybe ‘Titles Galore’.

When selecting a name it is also vital not to keep a one that may curtail the probability of expansion. For instance, it is all too common to call a woman’s boutique, ‘Designs for Women’ or ‘Women’s Fashion World’. And then when you intend bringing in men’s and children’s fashion, the original name is a misfit. So, instead a name like, ‘Wardrobe’, ‘Trend Setters’, would provide scope for expansion or consistency.

Finally a new trend brought into naming a business is that of Numerology, which is basically the study of the occult meanings of numbers and their supposed influence on human life. Many people do accept the workings of Numerology and prefer to have their business named in consultation with a Numerologist, who apart from selecting an appropriate name would also give the most effective way of spelling it.
